Highlights include dramatic masquerade pageants, steel band competitions and the crowning of a Carnival King & Queen.

Miami’s Caribbean Festival takes place over Columbus Day Weekend and includes music, dance, enchanting costumes and rhythmic drumming. Guests from across the Caribbean fly in to take part in the parades and new competitions for decorative floats and fancy dress are added each year. In 1990, the first Junior Carnival Parade was staged the day before the main parade to encourage all South Florida kids to join with thousands of their Caribbean classmates and participate in this diverse celebration.

Get ready for days of family fun, face painting for the kids and lots of great ethnic foods from all across the Islands. Miami’s Junior Carnival takes place Saturday, September 29th, 2018 from 12noon-11pm at Central Broward Regional Park. South Beach Magazine’s Art Basel Miami Beach 2017 Guide https://www.southbeachmagazine.com/art-basel-guide/ Fri, 24 Nov 2017 12:54:05 +0000 https://www.southbeachmagazine.com/?p=15903 [...]]]> While early December may bring dark and gloomy weather to most of the country, the sun shines brightly on South Florida where the world’s biggest stars gather to celebrate the Fine Art of the Deal that is Art Basel Miami Beach. So much more than a series of multi-million dollar international art fairs, this massive cultural showcase attracts A-list celebrities and big money socialites who attend VIP parties both public and private throughout the week.

While most of the world thrills to paparazzi photos of their favorite stars online each day, Miami plays host to artists, fashion designers, supermodels, professional athletes, and mega-stars who are rarely seen in public at the same time. Attendance at any of the art presentations comes with the very likely chance to rub elbows with screen icons and global billionaires who wander through the pavilions gazing at the collected works of classic and modern artists.

Art Basel

“Art Basel’s well-delineated sectors offer one of the most comprehensive looks at the state of art today.” ~ Isabella Mason

The focal point of South Florida’s art festival week, Art Basel Miami Beach takes over Miami Beach’s Convention Center during the first week of December to showcase contemporary paintings, sculptures, photographs, films and digital works by both established and emerging artists for over 70,000 visitors. Following a rigorous review process, 250 select galleries from across the world are assigned small, white-washed spaces organized by sectors throughout the massive meeting space to display their finest works for collectors, museum curators, international art critics and the general public. The show starts with two days of private showings followed by four rather spectacular afternoons of public viewing from Thursday throughout the weekend.

Satellite Art Fairs

Each December during Art Basel, nearly twenty Satellite Art Fairs are staged throughout South Florida from massive beachfront pavillions to tiny shipping containers, assorted hotel rooms and impromptu urban galleries across the city. One of the biggest weeks in visual art, the city is best navigated with a predetermined plan in mind and comfortable shoes in tow. Gala openings and late night after parties can be announced at the last minute (and Miami’s finicky weather plays an important role), so a degree of flexibility is essential to viewing success.

The primary fairs divide between Miami Beach and across Biscayne Bay in Miami with area museums and important galleries also hosting special events. The larger fairs offer dedicated shuttle service around Miami which may prove an important asset as traffic and parking issues abound. Best to enjoy the fairs in Miami one day and the showcases on Miami Beach the next to avoid the hassle of navigating crowds and causeways.

Free City Shuttle

Travel in style on a dedicated bus that runs about every 15 minutes.

Route 1 (East-West Route)

Miami Beach Stops: 17th St and Convention Center Dr.

Route 2 (North-South Loop)

Download the App “Miami Trolley” for more info.

The city will also offer the Miami-Dade Art Express bus route, also free.
Running every 20 minutes between 11am and 11pm, this is an alternate mode of transportation across the Julia Tuttle Causeway connecting Miami and Miami Beach.

Downtown, discover Art and Context Miami, Miami River Art Fair, NaDa Art Fair, Pinta Miami, Prizm, Red Dot, Spectrum Miami and Superfine! South Beach Wine & Food Festival 2017 https://www.southbeachmagazine.com/miami-readies-for-south-beach-wine-food-festival/ Tue, 31 Jan 2017 15:00:16 +0000 http://www.southbeachmagazine.com/?p=15170 [...]]]> With bright blue skies and golden sandy beaches, Miami in February can’t be beat. That’s why the Food Network and Cooking Channel stage the annual South Beach Wine and Food Festival right in the heart of Lummus Park from 10th through 13th Streets along Ocean Drive so true culinary royalty can mix and mingle with devoted foodies for one very special weekend. With a mission to EAT, DRINK & EDUCATE, the Best of the Best gather February 22 – 26 to raise funds for the Chaplin School of Hospitality & Tourism Management at Florida International University.

Once again this year, cooking enthusiasts will fly in from across the globe to get an up close and personal look at TV stars like Duff Goldman, Bobby Flay and Marcus Samuelsson. The main event, two days of gourmet bites, fine wines and live demonstrations takes place at the Goya Foods’ Grand Tasting Village within the massive pavillions erected right on the sands of South Beach. Staged over two glorious days on Saturday and Sunday February 25 and 26, more than 55 restaurants and over 100 wine suppliers will host continuous tastings while stars like Andrew Zimmern, Emeril Lagasse and Geoffrey Zakarian take to the KitchenAid Culinary Demonstration stages.

Because music plays such an important role in the South Beach scene, the festival has scheduled a special appearance by Snoop Dogg and Guy Fieri who will share a cooking demonstration on Saturday before Snoop hosts a jam session over Gin & Juice cocktails to round out the afternoon. Saturday night, Bacardi hosts a rum and bites beach party featuring Hip Hop legend Rev Run who performs at the Delano Beach Club alongside DJ Ruckus. On Sunday, nightlife impresario David Grutman transforms the Tasting Village Courtyard into a custom day club experience featuring world-renowned DJ Ingrosso on the decks.

“We’ve curated a robust program of events for the Festival’s 16th year,” notes Festival Founder and Director Lee Brian Schrager. “With an array of dinners, tastings, seminars, and parties showcasing a variety of cuisines, wines and spirits from around the world, guests will find plenty of ways to satiate their taste buds at this year’s Festival.”

One of the festival’s kick-off events, Barilla’s Italian Bites on the Beach takes place February 23, beachside at the chic, Delano Hotel where Valerie Bertinelli, Alex Guarnaschelli and Giada De Laurentis join forces with over 30 chefs to showcase regional Italian recipes and wines in a walk-around tasting from 7pm to 10pm. Musical guests include classic rock artists Little River Band who will play their hits while guests enjoy the flavors of Piedmont, Tuscany, Sardinia and more.

If you haven’t already secured your tickets, log onto the festival website sobefest.com or call 877.762.3933 to see what’s cooking at the South Beach Wine and Food Festival that suits your mood.

Art Basel Miami Beach | Miami’s Premier Art Event https://www.southbeachmagazine.com/attending-art-basel-miami-beach/ Mon, 09 Nov 2015 00:48:17 +0000 http://www.southbeachmagazine.com/?p=8314 [...]]]> On December 1-4, 2016, the eyes of the world—and the paparazzi—focus upon Art Basel Miami, a citywide art festival where international art collectors and the biggest celebrities in film, sport and fashion attend a week of dazzling exhibitions and swank social gatherings. Behind the scenes, millions of dollars quietly change hands as clever investors discretely buy and sell Picasso, Warhol and a unique variety of cutting edge contemporary works that frequently shatter every notion of fine art. Most important for the local economy, every hotel room in town sells out.

Art Basel Frequently Asked Questions

At last year’s myriad Art Fairs, thousands of patrons politely lined up to gaze at enormous inflatable sculptures, weeping taxidermy sheep, clear lucite handbags filled with gleaming gold plated handguns and dusty bits of twisted twine. Art Basel attracts more than 250 world-renowned Art Galleries representing over 2,000 artists who paint, sculpt, draw, weld and compose digital sound and video installations. Some exhibits fill the Miami Beach Convention Center and others take over local parks, galleries and enormous industrial shipping containers lining the sands of South Beach.

Art Basel Map
Art Basel Map

Art Basel divides the Miami Beach Convention Center—and much of the City, for that matter—into particular categories of art including the Nova, Positions, and Kabinett described below.

Dining in Style

With days of art tours and nights of industry parties, every guest visiting South Beach may struggle to find the right place to dine. Fine dining restaurants around the Convention Hall are frequently booked well in advance for private art collector’s dinners, so making reservations (via opentable.com) should be a top priority. Some of the most popular tables on the beach are at Katsuya and The Bazaar by José Andrés at the SLS Hotel, Matador Room at the Edition and Bianca at the Delano. For glamorous Italian eateries try Casa Tua or Cecconi’s at the Soho Beach House. Ideally, dinner plans in close proximity to the art events are vitally important when every minute of the day offers so many entertaining options. If you find yourself shut out of the best restaurants and sidewalk cafes, it may be necessary to travel farther away to find good food.

Popular steakhouses Prime 112, Red, BLT Steak and Meat Market will all be in great demand during December. Joe’s Stone Crab does not take reservations, but a carefully loaded handshake can do wonders in moving your party up the maître d’s list. Close enough to walk is Quattro Gastronomie Italiana, Juvia, and Haven on Lincoln Road Mall.

With collector’s brunches, late night concerts and miles of exhibit spaces to explore, finding time to check out South Beach nightclubs seems highly unlikely, but there will certainly be exclusive events at the FDR Lounge at the Delano, Hyde Beach Pool Party and Day Club at the SLS Hotel and Rec Room at the Gale. The DiLido Beach Club at the Ritz Carlton, the Lido Grill at the Standard Hotel & Spa and the Raleigh Martini Bar provide welcome refuge at sunset and the Library Bar at the Wyndham Grand is as cozy a lounge as you’re likely to find on South Beach.

Exhibition Sectors

Art Nova comprises galleries representing emerging artists, Art Positions provide a platform for a single major project by one significant artist and Art Kabinett focuses upon smaller groups, singular works and unique installations. The Oceanfront show transforms all of Collins Park at 21st Street Beach where modern art presentations move to a DJ’s beat each night and art patrons get a chance to mix and mingle at alfresco concerts by edgy media darlings like Iggy Pop and Peaches.

Art Basel Conversations and the Art Salon are unique, in-depth seminars that introduce the public to the notion of connoisseurship by connecting the would-be collector to some of the most important personalities in the art world. Guests can learn a great deal about both collecting and exhibiting art through direct encounters with important art collectors, museum directors, gallery icons, artists and architects. Together they review bold new projects, share the experiences they have had in the industry and provide an insider’s view of the upcoming trends. Most of these groundbreaking experiences happen at the Convention Center Auditorium in Hall D. Transcripts and videos of past events are available online at the Art Basel website.

Art Public comprises site-specific installations that appear in and around Miami Beach to help immerse city residents and members of the art community in the Basel experience. Last year’s exhibits included a diverse offering of works at Collins Park, at Sagamore The Art Hotel, the Convention Center and the public library.

Once the daily art show comes to a close, visitors to Miami and Miami Beach host dozens of elaborate parties at resort hotels, at the homes of millionaire art collectors and in the gallery spaces of Wynwood and the Design District. Champagne flows freely, while conversations include tales of savvy art purchases and wistful recollections of “the one that got away.”

One of the primary attractions of Art Basel and its related art fairs is the gambler’s chance of purchasing an artist’s work before fame is bestowed, which sends the price of an artist’s signature through the roof.

A rather elegant game of cat and mouse ensues with gallery owners and artists promoting their collections and trying to suss out the real buyers from the well-dressed party hoppers. Fashionable guests like Calvin Klein, Alber Elbaz, Naomi Campbell and Donna Karan mingle with super dealers like Larry Gagosian or Jeffrey Deitch and the crowds include a diverse who’s who of famous faces such as Keanu Reeves, Nicky Hilton, Yoko Ono, Gerard Butler and Pamela Anderson. Giddy party updates appear in Women’s Wear Daily, the New York Times and all the right blogs.

Attending Art Basel Miami Beach

While many vacationers might underestimate the impact of an international art fair on the Greater Miami area, it is important to note that by the time you read this article, MOST hotel rooms will already be fully booked for the first week in December. Occupancy rates for many rooms in South Florida start to climb in late November and continue well past New Year’s Eve. South Florida is also a transit point for thousands of cruise passengers from across the world and Miami Airport serves as a gateway to the international airports of Central and South America. By December when Art Basel rolls around, the annual pilgrimage of art fans, plus an impressive roster of wealthy VIPS (and the international media who follow them) creates a whirlwind of activity at every hotel, restaurant and lounge in Miami and Miami Beach.

This year’s Art Basel promises to be record breaking not only for attendance but for the sheer number of related activities in and around the primary installations. If you’re new to the art fair experience, know that the Miami and Miami Beach fairs are an endurance exercise comprising more interesting offerings than anyone could reasonably hope to take in during the week-long run. In addition to the main event, satellite fairs like Scope, Bridge, NADA, Photo Miami, Aqua, Art Asia, and the booming Design Miami compete with unofficial side projects and pop-up events under highway bridges and remote public parks. In summary: Pack your most comfortable shoes.

Hotels Great & Small

Art Basel at the Miami Beach Convention Center is a short walk from dozens of hotels, both posh and modest. On the top tier, consider the Setai, Ritz-Carlton South Beach, and the W South Beach. Suites at the Delano and Raleigh hotels are always much in demand.

Many of the glamorous South Beach resorts also host exhibitions and art industry parties in their nightclubs and lounges—more info on that aspect of Art Basel as announcements come through. Art Basel celebrity guests frequently choose the Delano where Susan Sarandon hosted an all-star ping pong tournament played on a custom crafted table as part of a full roster of nightly Art Basel soirees. Rumors of midnight skinny dipping keep these exclusive beachfront properties in high demand.

Nearby and equally popular, the all-suite Sagamore bills itself as “the Art Hotel” thanks to its extensive collection of contemporary art curated by hotel owners Cricket and Marty Tapin. The site of Spencer Tunick’s infamous nude photo shoot, the Sagamore balconies and pool were used as a backdrop for hundreds of “real” men and women who volunteered to pose at an all day naked art happening in October 2007. Images of the models frolicking on neon pink rafts in the hotel pool enjoy pride of place in the lobby lounge. If you stay at this hotel, the concierge can coordinate VIP tours of the nearby Wolfsonian or Bass Museum, the Lowe Art Museum, the Miami Art Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art and important private collections owned by Martin Margulies, the Rubell Family and Rosa and Carlos de la Cruz. Steps away find the Raleigh and the National Hotels, two landmark oceanfront properties which host some of the hottest poolside cocktail events at Basel.

Also considered party hotels, the modern simplicity of Townhouse and the Shoreclub attract the beautiful “gallerina” gadflies who gravitate to the glow of the 21st Street Oceanfront Basel exhibits and late night after parties like moths to the flame. Smaller boutique low-rises like the Cadet, the Catalina Beach Club, the Dorchester and the Albion provide a more intimate setting for an Art Basel getaway. Close enough to walk to all Art Basel events, these petite properties are tucked between the beachfront and the shops and cafes of Lincoln Road Mall. If the larger hotels are already booked, smart travelers should keep these hidden gems in their BlackBerries purely as a back-up plan. Insiders with more dash than cash can also reserve rooms at the Greenview, the Sadigo Court and the Crest to be close to everything yet decidedly off the radar. And don’t over look Miami’s environmentally conscious green hotels certified for their sustainability efforts.

Make Plans now

To best experience all of the sights, sounds and tastes of Art Basel, do as much advance research, reservations and planning as you can—and then be ready to drop everything when exciting last minute events and parties scramble your schedule. Miami Boat Show https://www.southbeachmagazine.com/miami-international-boat-show/ Thu, 12 Feb 2015 00:55:09 +0000 http://www.southbeachmagazine.com/?p=577 [...]]]> The 70th Annual Miami International Boat Show & Strictly Sail is the highlight of the February tourist season bringing over 130,000 visitors and more than 3,800 boat and nautical accessory exhibitors to our shores. Produced by the National Marine Manufacturers Association, a trade group representing about 80% of the companies that make boats, boat engines, trailers and gear for North American sportsmen, the show kicks off February 12-16 at the Miami Beach Convention Center and remote sites along Biscayne Bay in Downtown Miami and on Indian Creek north of 41st Street on Miami Beach.

The Convention Center floor and surrounding parking lots are packed with a million square-feet of boats and accessories offering guests a chance to check out the latest in personal watercraft from jet skis, inflatables, high performance speedboats, luxury yachts and all the gear to go along with them. The Sea Isle Marina on North Bayshore Drive hosts an impressive fleet of power boats and the Miamarina at Bayside Marketplace in Downtown Miami houses magnificent sailing craft. Each site is serviced by complimentary shuttle bus service making it quick and easy to glide through the exhibits without the hassle of traffic and searching for a parking spot.

Within the Convention Hall, The Big Game Room hosts over 100 exhibits dedicated to the sport fishing industry on the second level of the concourse. Vendors of rods, reels, hooks and lines join with the promoters of popular tournaments and fishing travel destinations to create a dedicated area for anglers at the show. Famous big game sportsmen and members of the Game Fishing Hall of Fame hold informative educational seminars on sport fishing, spear fishing, boat maintenance, fly-casting, and billfish challenges during the week. Improve your chances of landing a trophy catch at the Big Game Room.

In the calm waters of Indian Creek north of 41 Street, an awe-inspiring display of dozens of mega-yachts attracts a crowd of big spenders and big dreamers who marvel at the custom appointments including hot tubs and helicopters propped on deck. Southbound traffic along Collins Avenue grinds to a halt so curious onlookers can check out the bikini models and temporary disco docks set up to entertain the crowds. Champagne flows at waterside parties designed to attract the few remaining customers who are still in the market for an 85-foot cruiser with teak decks, polished fittings and glamorous staterooms.

Making Plans

A show of this magnitude takes over the entire city, booking out most hotel rooms, rental cars, and table reservations at popular restaurants. The fact that the event coincides with the 3-day President’s weekend when families frequently plan a Spring getaway adds even more volume to the annual traffic. It turns out that only those wise enough to confirm dates well in advance can hope to find a spot anywhere on the beach during Boat Show Week. If you follow this guide and confirm your reservations well in advance, your Boat Show visit will be ship shape in no time!

Hotels that are within walking distance to the Miami Beach Convention Center are available at every price point from the full service beachfront resorts along Collins Avenue to the smaller boutique properties found along James Avenue and Lincoln Road. If you are looking for ocean views, room service and all the amenities of a top shelf South Beach vacation, check rates at the Delano, the Ritz-Carlton South Beach and the Setai. If they are already booked,(and chances are they just might be filled with nautical bigwigs), venture to the W Hotel, the Shelborne, the Surfcomber and the National. For spacious beachfront rooms with an en suite kitchenette, the Sagamore has an upscale vibe and a lovely pool.

To save a little money so you can buy a bigger boat, smaller properties near the Convention Center still offer plenty of creature comforts but do not have ocean views, luxe swimming pools or 24 hour room service. At James Avenue, the Crest and Cadet Hotels join the Sanctuary in offering quiet guest rooms and a very short walk to the action. At 22nd Street, the Vintro is one of South Beach’s hidden gems for a bed & breakfast style getaway. On Lincoln Road, the Albion Hotel offers easy access to restaurants and bars and a mod hipster vibe in the renovated Art Deco lobby lounge. For an inexpensive hotel that’s a step away from the chic oceanfront retreats, the Gale has a fun rooftop pool & a cool Rec Room lounge and Catalina Beach Club has simply appointed rooms, a busy sidewalk cafe, a complimentary happy hour for hotel guests and a younger clientele.

Dining on South Beach during the Boat Show can be most challenging at the top-rated steakhouses and landmark restaurants. If you hope to score a table at Prime 112, Casa Tua or Meat Market, make reservations well in advance, confirm them a week prior to your arrival and expect to cool your heels in the bar while the hostess manages overflow crowds. Joe’s Stone Crab does not take reservations but a generously loaded handshake can sometimes minimize the wait. Other upscale options include Morimito or Katsuya for sushi, 1826 or Villa Azur for a supperclub atmosphere and the Edison’s new Matador Room for Latin-inspired fare.

Restaurants closest to the Convention Center are a welcome relief from mundane snack bar foods served on site. For a casual outing just steps away from the show, the sidewalk cafes of Lincoln Road are a welcome relief. Spris and Rosinella offer casual Italian fare. Khong River House, Doraku Sushi and Sushi Samba Dromo create interesting fusions of Japanese and Asian cuisines. Baires Grill is a cozy Argentinean steakhouse just across from New York’s own Shake Shack and AltaMare serves some of the freshest seafood on the mall. If you follow a gluten-free lifestyle, Oolite Cafe serves Florida fresh cuisine that’s healthy, organic and delicious!

For a quick drink between yachts, find Yard House, 100 Montaditos or Finnegan’s Too Bar. For authentic German beers, Hofbrau Munchen Beerhall is as close to Munich as you’re likely to find. At Happy Hour, nip into HuaHua’s Taqueria, Balans, Nexxt Cafe, or Lucky Strike Lanes. At the friendly Tex-Mex Rosa Mexicano, drinks and snacks are discounted after 4pm. Collins Avenue celebrates Happy Hour at Social Club at the Shelborne, Maxine’s and the Raleigh Hotel Martini Bar where drinks and snacks are just $7.

Design Miami 2014 https://www.southbeachmagazine.com/design-miami/ Sun, 16 Nov 2014 00:22:38 +0000 http://www.southbeachmagazine.com/?p=481 [...]]]> Design Miami celebrates art, architecture and modern industrial design at a grand pavilion erected in the rear parking lot of the Miami Beach Convention Center (at 19th Street & Meridian Avenue) so guests of Art Basel can access the site on foot. Showcasing cutting edge home furnishings crafted by contemporary artists, unique objects cast in resin, metal, concrete and wood and providing a glimpse of the kind of next-wave crafts only seen in glossy shelter magazines, Design Miami is a dazzling compendium of “What’s Next!”

At the heart of the main Miami Beach show tent, international design galleries display museum-quality furniture and objects d’art, lighting and sculpture often affordable only to private collectors or museums who wish to exhibit exceptional works dating back to the Modernism movement of the 1900s. The venue also features scheduled Design Talks where guests can participate in panel discussions, lectures and interviews with some of the biggest names in art, architecture and design. Design Satellite exhibits are staged throughout the city breaking the barriers of traditional museum presentations and allowing all interested parties to view the design process.

Once Art Week kicks off in December, guests face the daunting task of sorting out what exhibits, parties, seminars and performances should fill their overwhelming schedules. Design Miami operates twice-hourly shuttle busses to transport passengers from the main pavilion on Miami Beach to the Design District near MidTown to make it easier to reach Miami events without the hassles of renting a car or finding parking. From there, transport to the Midtown art fair tents is also available free of charge.

Design Miami is located at 19th Street & Meridian Avenue directly behind the Miami Beach Convention Center.

Show Dates are December 3-7, 2014

Art Miami https://www.southbeachmagazine.com/art-miami/ Sun, 02 Nov 2014 00:33:02 +0000 http://www.southbeachmagazine.com/?p=464 [...]]]> ART MIAMI fills the streets of MidTown December 2 – 7, 2014 with a VIP Preview on December 2, 2014. Thousands of eager contemporary art fans, and those who like to be seen on the scene, are ready to kick off our giddy December social season. Collectors, dealers, patrons and artists meet and mingle inside giant tents which are outfitted with state-of-the-art viewing galleries filled with paintings, sculpture, photography and mixed media compilations that are all for sale.

Unlike a tour through a modern art museum, the name of the game during Art Week in Miami is millions of dollars in sales! Art Miami showcases over 100 international galleries all trying to attract affluent collectors to new works by famous or undiscovered talent. Recent exhibits included huge installations meticulously crafted out of colorful aluminum drink cans re-purposed as art, taxidermy sheep heads engineered to weep softly as fans passed by and brightly colored canvasses of every shape and size.

The fair kicks off this year on December 5th with an opening night charity preview that benefits Lotus House Women’s Shelter in Downtown Miami. Last year’s opening gala was reported to have attracted more than 7,000 guests to the 125,000 square foot pavilion at the heart of MidTown Mall. While the streets south of the tents are filled with indie galleries and the new frontier that is Wynwood Arts District, Art Miami guests can find ample secure parking at the mall garages and enjoy many fine and casual dining options nearby.

South Beach Wine & Food Festival https://www.southbeachmagazine.com/south-beach-wine-food-festival/ Thu, 25 Sep 2014 00:41:23 +0000 http://www.southbeachmagazine.com/?p=639 [...]]]> FoodTV Network’s South Beach Wine and Food Festival rolls around February 19-22, 2015, and is a celebrity chef juggernaut bringing all the familiar faces from popular cooking shows to South Beach for round the clock parties, culinary demonstrations and cookbook autographing events. Whether you love to cook or simply like to watch other people slicing, dicing and grilling their way through the day on television, the events surrounding this Food & Wine Magazine sponsored weekend are lots of fun. Tickets for the event and reservations for chef dinners at restaurants all over town sell out well in advance so visit the event website, survey the choices and secure your spot in early October.

Currently in its 13th year on the sands of South Beach, the SBWFF is a star-studded, four day love fest for the characters who teach you how to prepare 30 Minute Meals, add a little BAM! to your dishes and take you on a road trip to some pretty tasty Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. Rachael, Emeril, Guy and Bobby mix it up with some of Miami’s top toques and spend their days meeting and mingling with fans who pay hundreds of dollars to join in champagne BBQs, haute Burger Bashes and luxe midnight suppers. Paula Deen, Anthony Bourdain, Eric Ripert and the new faces from Food Network Star attract over 55,000 guests to South Beach each year setting new records in festival attendance.

To date, the South Beach Wine & Food Festival has raised over $17 million to support the Florida International University School of Hospitality and Tourism Management including expanding teaching facilities and endowing scholarships for students. In addition to monetary support, culinary students are invited to work side by side with the super star chefs as they ready for their presentations at the fest. To learn about new offers, the latest dinner parties and who will be making a splash at the next festival before tickets go on sale, follow the event on FaceBook and Twitter and sign up for the Juicy Tidbits newsletter.

Miami Spa Month https://www.southbeachmagazine.com/miami-spa-month/ Mon, 28 Jul 2014 00:29:20 +0000 http://www.southbeachmagazine.com/?p=612 [...]]]> Miami Spa Month is July 1st to August 31st, 2014. Miami’s summer heat may wreck havoc on your hair and skin, but it is no match for hundreds of local professionals eager to launch a counter-offensive during Miami Spa Month, 60 days of discount treatments designed to help you look your best. Greater Miami and the Beaches have some of America’s top spas which attract travelers year round who seek a little extra pampering during their Florida vacation. To enhance the travel experience during summer’s hottest months, the Greater Miami Convention & Visitor’s Bureau organizes Spa Month to offer off-price packages designed to rub you the right way!

The fifth annual “PamperPallooza” kicks off in July with packages of spa treatments marked down to just $99 at most of the city’s most desired destinations. While smaller day spas also participate in the seasonal offer, some of the largest luxury hotel spas are also available at the same price. Adding to the value of your personal investment at spots like the Lapis Spa at the Fontainebleau Resort are reduced rates on valet parking and unrestricted access to the hotel’s spectacular Vegas-style pool deck where luxury VIP cabanas and drink service are just part of the charm.

Other beachfront spa locations include Agua at the Mondrian and Delano Hotels, Bliss at the W South Beach, Canyon Ranch’s Wellness Spa, Elemis Spa at the Loews South Beach and the fashionista’s favorite hideaway – ELLE Spa at the Eden Roc Miami Beach. Many spa packages include access to adjacent fitness centers such as the Ritz-Carlton South Beach Spa on Lincoln Road and Spa V at the Victor Hotel. Reservations for all appointments are required and most treatment menus will be posted on the official website in the Spring.

Circ X at the Fillmore https://www.southbeachmagazine.com/circx-cabaret-fillmore-miami-beach/ Sun, 27 Jul 2014 15:07:03 +0000 http://www.southbeachmagazine.com/?p=9642 [...]]]> The beautifully bizarre performance troupe, Circ X, partners with the Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theater to produce Miami’s own resident cabaret coming in September.

Says Circ X leader Diana Andrew-Lozano …

Thanks to the help of our backers on Kickstarter in 2012, we were able to produce our anniversary retro-spectacle on the Main Stage at the Fillmore to a packed house. We knew then that Miami was ready and hungry for this type of entertainment so we applied for a Knight Arts Challenge grant to pursue our dream of creating our resident cabaret show.

Unlike their previous three-hour performance marathon, this show will be condensed into one hour and performed TWICE in one evening. This will help keep the ticket cost low and allow more flexibility to either catch the show before dinner or afterwards.

The show will feature a variety of “short format” acts from neo-burlesque to theatrical circus artistry, showcasing South Florida’s fringe performance artists and providing them a place to take risks and explore.

Catch the next Circ X performance at the Fillmore Miami Beach on September 20th, 2014. To support the CircX Cabaret, go to KickStarter and make a pledge.

Art Basel Miami Beach https://www.southbeachmagazine.com/art-basel-miami-beach/ Tue, 08 Jul 2014 00:39:16 +0000 http://www.southbeachmagazine.com/?p=450 [...]]]> The cultural juggernaut that is Art Basel Miami Beach, which kicks-off December 4–7, 2014, has changed the tourist season on South Beach forever. International art fans, artists, gallery owners, art buyers and journalists fill the city with the deafening roar of art and commerce. Celebrities host great parties, wealthy patrons open their homes to tours of their priceless collections, clever PR flacks promote midnight pool parties, clandestine boat tours and meet & greets with reclusive artists. And then—like a mirage in a desert—all of the glitzy installations simply vanish overnight and the resort town goes back to business as usual.

Note: This year, Dec. 3rd will be reserved only for VIP guests: a “First Choice VIP” at 11 a.m. followed by “Preview VIP” at 3 p.m.

Instead of the brief lull between the family rush at Thanksgiving and the build up to Christmas & New Year’s events, the full capacity crowds that overwhelm every restaurant, bar, and hotel room in Downtown Miami and Miami Beach during the first week of December are now an annual occurrence. As a harbinger to the art assault last year, huge pink plastic snails appeared as if by magic at intersections all over Miami Beach to alert locals of the coming Art Basel BOOM! Sister exhibit to the prestigious Art Basel fair in Switzerland, the Miami Beach show draws thousands to the sunny shores of South Beach where days of film, music, art and architecture are celebrated in live performances, hourly seminars, guest lectures and spontaneous public displays.

Works from more than 2000 international artists line galleries at the Miami Beach Convention Center and adjunct contemporary pieces fill shipping containers at the Art Park at 21st Street Beach. Nightly concerts, International DJs and dancing under the stars make this the most popular after party in town. Satellite shows at many Miami Beach hotels and fairs across the bay in Miami are also scheduled during Basel week so critics, curators and collectors can make the most of their time in Miami. While the atmosphere can sometimes feel like a circus, for most visitors Art Basel is the greatest show on earth!

4th of July in Miami Beach https://www.southbeachmagazine.com/fourth-of-july-miami/ Tue, 24 Jun 2014 00:32:09 +0000 http://www.southbeachmagazine.com/?p=526 [...]]]> The 4th of July in Miami & Miami Beach is celebrated, among other locations, at 10th Street Beach where the city hosts an evening of music followed by a dazzling fireworks display over the Atlantic Ocean. Traffic along the busy Ocean Drive strip from 5-15th Street is diverted for the holiday to create a safer street party atmosphere and travelers and locals gather on the shore and at sidewalk cafes near 10th Street to get a front row seat to all of the action. A second fireworks display and pops concert on North Beach takes place at 73 Street Beach on Collins Avenue.

Meanwhile, in Downtown Miami, the City Fathers host an evening of music and fireworks just south of Bayside Marketplace (301 N. Biscayne Boulevard) in Downtown Miami at Bayfront Park where crowds bring blankets and lawn chairs to enjoy a picnic under the stars and fireworks at 9pm over Biscayne Bay. Coconut Grove celebrates in Peacock Park and Key Biscayne residents party on the Village Green.

If you want to attend one of the city fireworks festivals, be certain to arrive early as parking is often at a premium and traffic and crowds fill the streets making it unusually difficult to get where you want to go. Beach goers should refrain – as always – from bringing glass containers onto the sand but picnics, beach chairs and towels are essential. All activities are FREE and open to the public. Start times for musical performances vary, but most fireworks start sizzling at 9pm.

Fireworks locations around town

• Bayfront Park Downtown Miami – 301 North Biscayne Boulevard, Miami, FL.
• Peacock Park Coconut Grove – 2820 McFarlane Road, Coconut Grove, FL.
• Village Green Park Key Biscayne – 400 Crandon Boulevard, Key Biscayne, FL.
• South Beach Visitors Center – 1001 Ocean Drive, Miami Beach, FL.

This year’s official City of Miami Beach Fourth of July celebration moves to North Beach for an all-day festival with food trucks, live music (Spam Allstars and Marshall Brothers Band) and more. Catch waterfront sparklers from the North Shore Bandshell located at 73rd and Collins Avenue promptly at 9pm. Where: North Shore Bandshell, 73rd and Collins Avenue.

Fireworks for Foodies: Juvia

Reserve a space atop this popular Miami Beach rooftop to catch the fireworks and enjoy the harmonious blend of the regional cuisines of Asia, the vibrant flavors of South America and classic French techniques in the form of ceviches, tiraditos, fresh seafood and prime meats. Lunch seating available from 12-3pm and Dinner seating begins at 6pm. For reservations call 305-763-8272.

Emi Guerra’s AMPM has joined forces with the team behind Eats & Beats to present “Bacon Beach,” a celebration of the wavy, crunchy king of comfort food on the soft sands of Nikki Beach. DJs David Tort, LA Riots, David Solano, Damaged Goods, Laurent Simeca, Paul E, F3R, Chris Valencia, and Malone will spin tunes as guests dance off their eats and make room for more grub.

Chefs will create dozens of dishes in a culinary celebration of America’s favorite sweet and salty strip of pork. Menu items range from bacon deviled eggs and beer candied bacon, to bacon crab cakes and bacon foie gras, to a bacony twist on Fourth of July favorites like smoked ribs, bacon mac and cheese, bacon BBQ chicken drumsticks and bacon beef franks, finished off with mindblowing deserts like Nutella banana and bacon crepes, bacon maple canoli’s and bacon churros with dulce de leche. One should make sure to mark November 29th from 7pm – 12pm on their White Party Week schedule for the White Party™! It will be a chic night of fashion, global cuisine, unlimited cocktails, casinos, special performances and so much more. In fact, DJ David Knapp and conductor Sam Hyken are adding a whole new level of sophistication and excitement by combining electronic music with a full orchestra. The fierce new venue at the Perez Art Museum of Miami overlooks Biscayne Bay, cruise ships and downtown Miami. It was also designed by international landscape designers in an innovative way that resembles the hanging gardens of Babylon. Round Trip shuttle service is available from the National Hotel on Miami Beach. Valet Parking will also be available for $25 at the event. Self-parking will be available for $15 at the Hyatt Regency, with complimentary shuttles to the museum throughout the night. Tickets can be purchased at www.whiteparty.org. The parties continue on Monday with Swan Song at TWIST and White Horizons, the legendary morning party at Mekka, with DJ Morabito.

Both tickets and passes are available for our guests to select from. Prices vary each month. Our most coveted pass “the Diamond Pass ($315)” is already sold out. It gained admission to the White Party (where everyone is a VIP) and Muscle Beach Party VIP. Through the White Party, for over 30 years, Care Resource has been able to raise millions of dollars for HIV/AIDS research, prevention, care and treatment services to individuals in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties. Indeed, our not-for-profit agency has spent years building the infrastructure needed to benefit our HIV positive community. The last six years have ushered in a real maturing for us. We took our model of excellence and expanded it to include not only those with HIV, but all of South Florida’s diverse LGBT and less privileged communities. Today, we are a full-fledged federally qualified community health center (FQHC) – a medical home for all those in need. Every visitor that joins us for White Party Week™ is a dollar more we will have to care for those who need us.

White Party which has always been, since its conception by Frank Wager, not a corporate venture, but a way to save lives. It is about our community, which has year after year come together to help raise money to care for its own. White Party is not about business enterprise, it is about people, friends, those we care for, and those whose memories we will continue to honor, by helping those we still can.
